I've been a cheerleader for full, softly arched brows for almost a decade now. Why? They frame your face. They add definition to your eye area. And they even make your face appear more youthful, whether you're 25 or 65. They're an exceptional anti-ageing weapon, really.
But not all of us own a pair of thick, natural-looking eyebrows, especially older millennials. We can mostly blame the '90s for this, a decade that left many of us with overly plucked, unbalanced, and overly arched brows.
Fast forward to 2017, and the owners of such brows are proactively trying to correct them, but they find themselves in a tricky predicament: the hair is simply refusing to regrow. And if it does, it's sparse, patchy and often falls out soon after. I've been there, and it's painful. Transforming your eyebrows from wonky tadpoles to untouched teenage brows is tough.
Microblading exists precisely for this reason. The treatment can fix a terrible brow almost instantly, but it makes some of us nervous. Some simply have commitment issues; others are terrified they'll be left with brows that are too dark, too thick, and oddly shaped.
Thankfully, there is another option. It's not instant, it requires commitment and it's unconventional, but it works. My brows and I are living proof.
In the early 2010s, I found myself in eyebrow rehab, under the impeccable guidance of Milla Herath — international brow stylist, makeup artist and founder of Beauty Coterie. Over the next year, she helped me actively regrow and reshape my brows, creating a shape that worked best for my bone structure and facial features. The result was phenomenal and being patient truly paid off — I now had full, youth-enhancing brows.
However, breaking up with my tweezers alone was not enough to regrow my brows. I needed a little extra help to get there. Over-plucking and waxing in the early 2000s had left me with sparse patches, and the hair wasn't growing back like I'd hoped. Plus, I had a scar in my right brow to contend with. But then I started using this product: Regaine Men's Extra Strength Hair Loss Treatment ($48.99). (Or, what I would come to fondly know as the be-all and end-all of brow regrowth products.)
It isn't your usual brow regrowth product like Priori Lash Recovery Serum ($84.15) or Talika Eyebrow Lipocils Expert ($69), but it does the job. A stellar job, in fact. It's actually designed to be used on the heads of males with hereditary hair loss where it stimulates hair growth for a fuller, thicker mop of hair, but it also works wonders on your brow area.
After recommending I perform a patch test to ensure I wasn't allergic or didn't react to the product when it was used on my brows, Milla advised I apply the hair loss treatment to a clean brow area once or twice a day for at least three to six months.
In the beginning, I tried to apply it morning and night to speed up the regrowth process. However, I found it too tricky to fit in the drying time required before my morning skincare and makeup application. So, I settled for once a day, before bed. That way I could cleanse my skin, apply my array of skincare products, and then clean the brow area with a micellar water-soaked cotton bud and treat the area with the hair loss liquid. By applying it last, I didn't need to wait for the product to soak in before hitting the sack, and I also didn't move the product around my face when rubbing in my moisturiser.
Through trial and error, I found using cotton buds was the easiest way to apply the product. I'd dip one end in the liquid solution, and coat one brow and the surrounding sparse areas with the product. I'd then flip the cotton bud, and do the same for the other brow. It soon became a part of my nightly skincare regimen, and only took an extra 30 seconds of my time.
After four weeks of vigilant application, I started to see new hair growth forming in areas that had remained bare for years. By week eight, there was enough growth for Milla to truly start transforming my brows. I visited her brow bar on a weekly basis during this stage, where she threaded large areas of unwanted hair, plucked stray hairs near my brow, and tinted new, fairer hairs to create a fuller-looking brow.
Finally, after six months of daily applications, the Regaine hair loss treatment had officially completed its task. The product may have been unconventional, but it worked. My eyebrows were naturally full, thick and perfectly enhanced, with no bald or sparse patches. Despite this, I continued to apply the product daily for a further six months. I considered it security. I finally had my dream brows, and I couldn't bear to lose them.
Fast forward to 2017, and I've noticed my brows are starting to thin out again. They're still full, but after a few stressful months, they're no longer as thick as they used to be. I'm relying on my beloved brow pencil a little more than I'd like, so I'm proactively starting another round of Regaine Men's Extra Strength Hair Loss Treatment use. It's an investment of both time and money, but it's worth it because it works. I may even have to repeat the treatment every three or four years because Regaine maintains its results with continued use, but at least I've found a solution. Thin, over-plucked and over-arched brows will never be an issue again.
