Innovative hair loss treatment uses amniotic fluid

Hair loss can be frustrating, but for those who are at the early stages or are ineligible for a hair transplant, an innovative solution may help— a brand-new form of treatment that uses amniotic tissue. The non-surgical treatment takes about an hour and uses the patient's blood as the foundation. The blood is centrifuged to separate the platelets, which have growth compounds, and then the platelets are mixed with stem cell-rich amniotic tissue. The plasma-like substance is injected into the patient's top layer of scalp. Dr. Misbah Khan of New York City is one of few specialists who offers this procedure in the United States, Fox 5 reported. The procedure works by slowing down hair loss within a matter of days— sometimes after the first shampoo— then, after shedding is reduced, the hair growth takes over. Regrowth takes about a year, Khan told Fox 5. The procedure is about $7,000, while the average price of a hair transplant is $20,000. Source: Innovative hair lo

Innovative hair-loss treatment

Dr. Misbah Khan in New York City is one of the very few doctors across the country who offers a brand-new form of treatment that uses amniotic tissue. NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - It might not be as common but hair loss for women is just as tough to deal with. Dr. Misbah Khan in New York City is one of the very few doctors across the country who offers a brand-new form of treatment that uses amniotic tissue. When Jasmin Irrizarry was 30 years old she was diagnosed with a thyroid disorder. That was also when she began losing her hair. Now she visits Dr. Khan for the first-of-its-kind procedure. It takes just about an hour. It is non-surgical and the results are immediate. Here is how it works. First, the patient's blood is drawn. It then goes into a centrifuge that separates the blood's platelets, which have growth compounds. Those platelets are then mixed with amniotic tissue, which is rich in stem cells, a plasma-like substance that's then injected into the pat

How Should Balding Men Style Their Hair?

Hair loss: It's a fact of life for millions of people. But for all the men out there: Losing your hair does not mean resorting to a Trump-esque 'do (read: please, never ever do that). Your hair can still look great even when the crops are, ahem, sparser than they used to be. Allow us to show you the ways...  1. Get the right cut. Obviously, it's important to keep where you're losing your hair in mind. "When losing hair in the front, depending on the severity of the hairline's recession, you can use the hair on top to create a new hairline or partially cover up extreme recessions," says Russell Cordeiro, a stylist at Art + Autonomy Salon in New York City. He adds that this technique should be used in a "sparing manner," as growing hair long to cover a problem area can actually draw attention to gaps or thinness. Taxotere Breast Cancer Drug Lawsuit Filed Over Permanent Hair Loss

The makers of the breast cancer drug Taxotere face a growing number of hair loss lawsuits filed on behalf of women nationwide, who allege they were not adequately warned that hair may not regrow following chemotherapy, and that equally effective alternative treatments were available that do not carry the same risk.  One of the latest lawsuits was filed by Carol Webb, of Gretna, Louisiana, who filed her complaint (PDF) in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana on June 17. Like other lawsuits over hair loss from Taxotere, Webb alleges that Sanofi-Aventis knew or should have known about the risk when they introduced the high-potency taxane-based drug, yet failed to adequately warn women and the medical community, while promoting use of their newer medication, even though it is no more effective than older breast cancer treatments that were already on the market. Webb indicates that she was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the right breast in J

So, too, there is a counterpart in beauty: "mom hair." You've likely seen it at suburban malls: the longer-in-back, slightly–shorter-in-front bob that should read sleek but is inescapably frumpy. And even the city-dwelling mom isn't immune. Perhaps she has added her own twists like blunt bangs or extra layering, but the 'do still falls short of flattering. "I see it all the time," said Juan Carlos Maciques, a stylist at the Rita Hazan salon in Manhattan. "The first thing new moms want to do is cut their hair off. They're feeli

What You Need To Know About Hair Loss In Men (And Women)

Whether or not you are likely to have thinning hair -- or go completely bald -- is pretty much outside your control. Sorry, folks, but when it comes to hair loss, the process is almost 100 percent genetic. (So if you find you're losing hair, you might want to have a word to your parents.) However, that's not to say you are powerless to stop the process, with treatments available to combat balding (as well as to stimulate hair growth) which have proved largely effective. But what is the deal with hair loss in the first place? Why does it happen, how can we stop it and does it differ between men and women? The Huffington Post Australia spoke to Professor of Dermatology at the University of Melbourne and director of Sinclair Dermatology, Rodney Sinclair, to find out. Hair loss: the facts "Of all the genetic traits -- height, weight and so forth -- baldness is one of the few which is 80 to 90 percent genetic, and only 10 percent environmental," Sinclair told

Fat Tricks for Thin Hair

Lisa Rinna sporting a choppy shag — David Livingston/Getty Images Mother Nature has some nerve: Just as we peak in pluck and confidence, she blindsides us with a twist, adding pounds to our figure and taking away our hair. The extra weight is hardly a deal breaker; we simply buy better support bras and shapewear, or dial up the 'tude. But thinning hair threatens our sex appeal and self-confidence. We dread windy days. We consider starting a hat collection. Some of us may go so far as to wig it. No need for that nuclear option, my friends. Simply follow these tips to make today your last bad hair day. Own the problem. What should you do when a mere annoyance — a wider part, say, or a skinnier ponytail — escalates to scalp-exposing, all-over thinning? Consider it a heads-up: "Hair loss is prevalent in women over 50," says Whitney Bowe, a dermatologist in New York. "It affects 25 percent of women by age 49, 41 percent by age 69 and half of all women by a

Taxotere Risk of Permanent Hair Loss Withheld from Women and Doctors, Lawsuit Alleges

As more women learn about the link between Taxotere and permanent hair loss, a growing number of product liability lawsuits are being filed against the manufacturer of the breast cancer chemotherapy drug, alleging that patients and the medical community were not adequately warned that hair does not regrow for many women. A complaint filed last week in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, raises similar claims to those presented in other cases filed by women throughout the U.S. in recent months who have experienced permanent hair loss after undergoing breast cancer treatment involving use of the controversial Sanofi-Aventis drug. The lawsuit was filed by Alina S. Gorniak, alleging that breast cancer patients and the medical community have been provided false and misleading information about the Taxotere risk of permanent hair loss, depriving them of the opportunity to make an informed decision about whether to use the drug over other available chemotherapy dr

Efficacy of Treatments Compared for Female Pattern Hair Loss

June 07, 2016 Researchers analyzed 47 studies which included 5,290 patients. The safety and efficacy of topical minoxidil for the treatment of female pattern hair loss was supported by moderate to low quality evidence in a recent Cochrane systematic review.  Female pattern hair loss, or androgenic alopecia, is the most common form found in women. Esther J van Zuuren, from Leiden University Medical center, Ledien, Netherlands, and colleagues conducted a review to determine the safety and efficacy of available options for the treatment of female pattern hair loss. They searched various databases and trial registries as well as the reference lists of included and excluded studies to include randomized-controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of interventions for female pattern hair loss in women.  A total of 47 studies including 5,290 study patients, were included for the analysis; 17 of the studies evaluated minoxidil. Female Hair Loss: Should You Be Worried?

© Best Health Magazine Canada Image Chrome Drone. The Horseshoe. While male-pattern baldness receives no shortage of awareness– even if it is through unfortunate monikers like these – it's a health topic that receives little to no public acknowledgement for women. Most of us are used to a bit of shedding in the shower or on our brushes. The Ottawa-based Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) estimates that we lose about 100 of our 100,000 hairs each day but adds that this is completely normal and most of it will grow back. When to start worrying What's more worrisome are bald patches or a widening of your part. 'An estimated 30 percent of women over the age of 40 and 45 percent of post-menopausal women suffer from hair loss,' says Dr. Vincent Durosier, medical affairs manager for Ducray Dermatological Laboratories in Toulouse, France. Here's what's going down on top of our heads. When it comes to growing our locks, on average, we grow about half a

All strands at ease

Most men experience hair loss in their lives, but the severity and speed change from one person to the next. Regardless of age, if your hairline isn't what it used to be, you're probably wondering "what now?" From styling and care to treatment and prevention, here are a few things to know about your new reality. THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT "If you're seeing less and less hair, you may be experiencing androgenetic alopecia, which is male inherited balding," says Jonathon Graff, Director of Clinical Research & Education of Apira Science. "This is the most common cause of hair loss in men and is usually characterised by a receding hair line, loss in the crown or 'bald spot,' or general thinning hair throughout the top of the head. Men generally begin to experience androgenic alopecia in their early 20s, although it can take years before becoming noticeable." Hair loss is caused by genetics and hormones — usually a combination of the two. Dih

7 new at-home ways to help your thinning hair

It's normal to shed hair—from 50 to 100 hairs a day, in fact—but some 40 percent of American women are losing noticeably more by midlife, according to data presented at the most recent meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology. The signs can be subtle—seeing more hairs in your brush and in the drain, and realizing that your part is widening or that you can wrap an elastic band more times around your ponytail than before (Not sure? Here are 8 signs your hair is thinning.) "Often women are not aware of thinning hair until they have lost 15 percent of their hair volume, which means it started long before they noticed it," says trichologist, hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley. Fortunately, regardless of why your hair is thinning—whether it's from genetics, hormonal changes, medications, medical conditions or lifestyle factors—new treatments that you can do at home show promise in restoring fuller manes. In just one recent finding, women who took Viviscal Profe
