Have you noticed sudden hair loss?

Telogen effluvium is a very common form of hair loss. For some people it's the bodies natural way of reacting to physical/ emotional changes or to a traumatic event in their life. Our bodies and mind don't always accept and adjust well to change fast enough, causing our appetites, sleep patterns and even our hair growth cycles to be interrupted.

When hair growth is interrupted, the hair follicle gets stuck in what's called the telogen phase and will stop growing, also none as the resting phase. After it stops growing it will then lead into the exogen phase, which is when our hair will shed and fall out. Cycling into the anagen growth phase, but if this cycle is interrupted due to sudden changes in our bodies the follicle can fail to regrow again. Telogen effluvium is temporary hair loss due to emotional and/ or physical trauma. At this point, your hair loss and thinning will become more noticeable.

Reasons for sudden hair loss can be from...

-physical trauma (severe car accident)

-child birth

-menopause

-emotional trauma (death in the family or a divorce)

-new medication

-crash diet

-chemotherapy or other cancer treatments

-major surgery

Good news, your hair usually will revert back to a normal growth cycleonce your bodies adjust back to it's normal state. Typically this can take around six months.

Suggestions

Visit your doctor and a dermatologist to confirm the cause of your hair loss. Blood tests can be done if you have other symptoms other than your hair loss. Remember hair loss can also be caused by genetics, hormones or medical conditions so properly diagnosing is important.

Allow several months for your body to adjust. To jump start your hair into the regrowth stage, topicals such as minoxidil can be applied to scalp, vitamins and laser light therapy can be used. All of these treatments can also aide in having healthier hair than before.

Remember to treat your scalp and hair with a gentle touch during this period. Some people will also choose to cut their hair short to create volume with the remaining hair. Others will wear hats, hair pieces and wigs to conceal their thin hair.

During pregnancy, a lot of women may start to feel like Rapunzel due to their hair growing so fast and strong that you feel it could hoist a handsome prince up a tower (wouldn't that be great?). A Breakthrough for Hair Loss! PGD2 and Natural Ways to Regrow Your Hair

In 2012, the dermatology departments of the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University generated a lot of buzz around a potential "miracle cure" for baldness. The big discovery? A relationship between prostaglandin D2 (a fatty acid derivative) and male pattern baldness, and hair loss in women. The researchers demonstrated, for the first time in humans, that a lipid derivative called prostaglandin D2 was elevated in balding areas – but not in hair-bearing areas – of men with hair loss. More importantly, they also discovered that prostaglandin D2 inhibits hair lengthening. The more prostaglandin D2 present, the shorter a hair grows. The team suggested that by maybe inhibiting prostaglandin D2 in the scalp, hair loss might be stopped. And that got a lot of hair loss sufferers (and pharmaceutical companies) excited. Prostaglandin-D2 inhibitors were already in trials as a treatment for asthma. It wouldn't be hard to develop a topical for men&#
