Healthy hair grows at an average rate of one centimeter a month for about three years. This phase is referred to as anagen. The hair then dies and sits dormant in the follicle during the telogen phase, which can last anywhere from two to four months. When strands get stuck in growth rut, dihydrotesterone (DHT) is likely to blame. Simply put, DHT is a sex hormone that's known to shorten the anagen (growth) phase.
