Nioxin Team Talks Brand History and Combatting Hair Loss

Since 1987, Nioxin has a range of thinning-hair systems and specialized products. As a result, Nioxin helps salons create personalized solutions beginning with a consultation. Each products offer skincare-for-hair technologies to address key hair and scalp needs.

The brand's products are tailored to address the three signs of hair thinning: derma, an unhealthy scalp environment; density, fewer hair strands; and diameter, finer hair strands. The specific product lines include three-part system kits, hair regrowth treatment, salon-only dermabrasion service Scalp Renew, intensive therapy, scalp recovery and 3D styling.

Here, we interview the Nioxin team to learn more about the brand's history, products, education and more.

When and why did Nioxin get involved in hair loss?In 1987, we began because of one woman's wish to make people feel good about themselves. Inspired by her own experience, Eva Graham made it her life's mission to help men and women keep their hair. After giving birth, Graham lost half of her hair and found no real solution to grow it back. She began cultivating her own approach to healthy hair, starting with the scalp. She realized the scalp is simply an extension of the face; it needs gentle ingredients to breathe and function correctly. Growing up, Graham loved to explore nature. She developed an instinctive understanding of the healing power of plants. With this knowledge, she started experimenting with herbs and botanicals. She teamed up with biologists, chemists, pharmacologists and hairdressers and talked endlessly to consumers to create a skincare company for hair.

How does Nioxin help salons drive revenue? We offer a complete range of products that fit within multiple salon revenue categories. Scalp Renew and Intensive Therapies are great options for stylists to offer their clients in salon services. For example, we offer a Diamax Advanced Treatment that thickens the diameter of the hair and is great for blowouts at the back bar. Salon clients can also experience take home products like the 3-Part System Kits, Advanced Thinning & Regrowth, Scalp Recovery, 3D Styling and Night Density Rescue. These are great for driving salon retail business. Each of these products present unique ways for stylists to solve their clients' needs for thicker, fuller looking hair. All pricing decisions are at the discretion of the retailer.

What education does Nioxin provide? Our education training, called Mind. Heart. Skills by Nioxin: Professional Education for Thinning Hair, teaches stylists how to handle hair thinning and hairloss. Half of the salon clients you work with every day are concerned with thinning hair, and the number-one trusted source of advice is the stylist. Stylists can become a certified Niologist thinning hair expert. The basis of our education is to open minds with deeper understanding of hair and scalp science, engage hearts to make a positive emotional impact on every salon client and develop skills to elevate the craft of cut, care and styling for thinning hair.

A Breakthrough for Hair Loss! PGD2 and Natural Ways to Regrow Your Hair

In 2012, the dermatology departments of the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University generated a lot of buzz around a potential "miracle cure" for baldness. The big discovery? A relationship between prostaglandin D2 (a fatty acid derivative) and male pattern baldness, and hair loss in women. The researchers demonstrated, for the first time in humans, that a lipid derivative called prostaglandin D2 was elevated in balding areas – but not in hair-bearing areas – of men with hair loss. More importantly, they also discovered that prostaglandin D2 inhibits hair lengthening. The more prostaglandin D2 present, the shorter a hair grows. The team suggested that by maybe inhibiting prostaglandin D2 in the scalp, hair loss might be stopped. And that got a lot of hair loss sufferers (and pharmaceutical companies) excited. Prostaglandin-D2 inhibitors were already in trials as a treatment for asthma. It wouldn't be hard to develop a topical for men&#
