Hearing loss may soon be reversible

Medical Scientists have just discovered a drug which will cure deafness, hearing loss permanently

According to a report published by The Atlantic, human trials are set to begin which will involve a drug that successfully regrew hair cells in mice. Notably absent in mammals, the notch inhibitors were introduced into the cochlea of mice by Edge and his team to regrow cilia relating to specific frequencies lost by the mice. It's estimated that more than a third of seniors suffer from moderate hearing loss, and that number seems likely to grow as fans of bands like Nirvana and Metallica start to get up there in years.

The days of permanent hearing loss as an occupational hazard for professional musicians might soon be over.

The key to restoring hearing, according to Dr. Albert Edge, who works for Audion Therapeutics, is a "notch inhibitor" molecule, which Audion's research has shown gives rise to new hair cells in lab cultures.

So far, the results are promising; When the drug-regenerated hair cells were placed inside animals' cochlea, the animals became better able to detect sound frequencies which correlated to their placement.

A Dutch company called Audion Therapeutics has now jumped off from where the original group of scientists left off and are working on formally developing research on the possible regrowth of human ear hair cells.

The Atlantic notes that it may be years or decades before an effective treatment is discovered, but it looks like hope (and better hearing) may be on the horizon.

A Breakthrough for Hair Loss! PGD2 and Natural Ways to Regrow Your Hair

In 2012, the dermatology departments of the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University generated a lot of buzz around a potential "miracle cure" for baldness. The big discovery? A relationship between prostaglandin D2 (a fatty acid derivative) and male pattern baldness, and hair loss in women. The researchers demonstrated, for the first time in humans, that a lipid derivative called prostaglandin D2 was elevated in balding areas – but not in hair-bearing areas – of men with hair loss. More importantly, they also discovered that prostaglandin D2 inhibits hair lengthening. The more prostaglandin D2 present, the shorter a hair grows. The team suggested that by maybe inhibiting prostaglandin D2 in the scalp, hair loss might be stopped. And that got a lot of hair loss sufferers (and pharmaceutical companies) excited. Prostaglandin-D2 inhibitors were already in trials as a treatment for asthma. It wouldn't be hard to develop a topical for men&#
