Dealing With A Receding Hairline

Most men experience hair loss in their lives, but the severity and speed change from one person to the next. Regardless of age, if your hairline isn't what it used to be, you're probably wondering "what now?" From styling and care to treatment and prevention, here are a few things to know about your new reality.

The Science Behind It

"If you're seeing less and less hair, you may be experiencing androgenetic alopecia, which is male inherited balding," says Jonathon Graff, Director of Clinical Research & Education of Apira Science. "This is the most common cause of hair loss in men and is usually characterized by a receding hair line, loss in the crown or 'bald spot,' or general thinning hair throughout the top of the head. Men generally begin to experience androgenic alopecia in their early 20s, although it can take years before becoming noticeable." Hair loss is caused by genetics and hormones — usually a combination of the two. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the main hormonal culprit; it is produced by testosterone and can affect men at different rates. It collects at the follicle and can permanently damage the hair's ability to grow. Some men experience this as early as their late teens or early 20s, while others have a much slower progression; regardless, most men will see the effects o f DHT in their lifetimes. (Women produce DHT at much slower rates due to their lower levels of testosterone, though they often do experience a slow yet progressive loss of hair.) "Every hair follicle is genetically programmed to be more or less susceptible to various hormones in the body," says Graff. "More susceptible or weaker follicles will be damaged when confronted with these hormones, causing the hair to first shed and gradually become thinner and finer with each regrowth until, eventually, the follicle itself succumbs and dies. An inherited trait, the amount of susceptible hair a person has is solely reliant on genetic chance and so can't be predicted, but naturally those born with more of the weaker follicles will experience the greatest loss.

Styling & Care

If you want to keep a short or medium style, aim for a cut that is less than three inches in length; you can create the illusion of more hair if you keep a part and wear the hair down over your forehead, swept to the side. "I always add more texture and focus on breaking up the thicker areas to give the appearance of a more even, full length," says Garrett Pike, Head Barber at Persons of Interest Barbershop in Brooklyn, NY. Pike suggests using matte products, so as to not draw more attention to your hair with any shine. Most matte products are good for creating texture and volume, too, which can help mask thinning hair. As for hair care, maintain a steady routine of shampooing and conditioning. While it is often advocated that people don't wash their hair every day (since shampoo can also strip hair of the natural, healthy oils), men with thinning hair should reconsider; shampooing keeps the hair follicles clear of any suffocating buildup, and it will give you the appeara nce of fuller hair, since you are removing all of the natural oils. Conditioner will keep the hair soft and hydrated, which will provide healthy balance to the daily shampoo application. Blow dry after showering to add volume while styling.

Styles To Consider

Irene Bredthauer at Latest-Hairstyles.com suggests the following cuts:

Brushed back: "Hair is cut short [on the sides, up] to the part line and left longest on top in the center." Keep a couple inches up top so you can also sweep it across the forehead for a more casual look. (See "forward fringe" below.)Short and sweet: "Shorter hair is better for thin hair. A short blunt cut [all around the head] makes hair look full and dense instead of thin and wispy."Forward fringe: "Leaving a little length on top can make thin hair look full. It can really help frame the face and give you some cool texture… Short, tapered sides are blended up into a slightly longer length on top."

Prevention And Treatment: Medical Options

If you're hoping to regrow some of the lost hair, then you're (kind of) in luck: There are a number of hair loss treatments, though they work to varying success and, as Graff notes, it's difficult enough for companies to get FDA approval in the first place. That aside, your results will depend on how soon you take action.

A Breakthrough for Hair Loss! PGD2 and Natural Ways to Regrow Your Hair

In 2012, the dermatology departments of the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University generated a lot of buzz around a potential "miracle cure" for baldness. The big discovery? A relationship between prostaglandin D2 (a fatty acid derivative) and male pattern baldness, and hair loss in women. The researchers demonstrated, for the first time in humans, that a lipid derivative called prostaglandin D2 was elevated in balding areas – but not in hair-bearing areas – of men with hair loss. More importantly, they also discovered that prostaglandin D2 inhibits hair lengthening. The more prostaglandin D2 present, the shorter a hair grows. The team suggested that by maybe inhibiting prostaglandin D2 in the scalp, hair loss might be stopped. And that got a lot of hair loss sufferers (and pharmaceutical companies) excited. Prostaglandin-D2 inhibitors were already in trials as a treatment for asthma. It wouldn't be hard to develop a topical for men&#
