Dr. Candace Spann gives new hope to women suffering from hair loss

Hair loss is not an easy subject to talk about, especially for women. From almost the beginning of time, men have had access to wigs, transplants and medications to help deal with their challenged follicles. Women on the other hand have hidden the problem with wigs, hair extensions and hats, never really treating the underlying problem.

After suffering her own bout with hair loss, Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Candace Spann set out to create a regrowth product especially for women. After several successful clinical trials, ReTress was ready to hit the market. The four part system includes shampoo, conditioner, serum and supplements and is available at beauty retailer Sephora. Here is her take on how to navigate the world of women's growth products.

Christa Emmer: We all remember the popular Hair Club for Men commercials that clogged up the airways, but we never really heard any mention about hair loss for women. Why do you think women are more comfortable talking about it?

Dr. Spann: Hair loss is not solely a male problem. Because we know the cause of men's hair loss, it tends to be easier to treat. In addition, men's hair loss tends to be localized, whereas women's hair loss is diffuse. This makes men better candidates for hair transplantation. Since 40% of the hair loss market is now female, women suffering with thinning hair are finally starting to receive the attention they deserve. With ReTress, we are focusing on the issues that affect women. ReTress uses all natural active ingredients to stimulate follicles by helping improve blood flow to the scalp, helping calm inflammation in the scalp, and helping to reduce the shedding (so you can keep the hair you have!). Our vitamin also gives support to the follicles to improve their vitality.

Christa Emmer: What would you classify as 'hair loss that requires treatment' and what are some of the causes?

Dr. Spann: Any hair loss that results in perceived thinning by the client qualifies as "hair loss that requires treatment." It's important for us to realize that we will not recognize a woman's hair as thinning until she has lost 50 percent of her hair. Since this is such an emotionally devastating problem, we do a disservice to her if we invalidate her concerns. Whether she is worried about excessive shedding, has noticed a decreased density in her hair, has hair loss related to underlying medical problems, stress, childbirth, or styling practices, we should be helpful in the treatment.

Christa Emmer: What kind of results should you expect from an over-the-counter hair replenishing product?

Dr. Spann: With ReTress, most clients start to like the way their hair looks within the first week. The volumizers, conditioners, and thickeners help to improve the appearance of the hair very quickly. Active shedding is usually dramatically reduced within approximately 4 weeks. By about 8 weeks of use, the density starts to improve. By 12-16 weeks, friends and family are typically noticing the improvement in the appearance and volume of hair.

Christa Emmer: Is there an easy way to breach the subject with a friend or family member that looks like they could benefit from treatment?

Dr. Spann: We never want to alienate anyone, so this is a topic that must be approached delicately. Sharing a personal story or concern about your own hair shedding is a good way to invite someone to open up about their experience. Most women who are thinning are aware that they are thinning and will jump at the chance to start talking about it, if they are approached gently.

A Breakthrough for Hair Loss! PGD2 and Natural Ways to Regrow Your Hair

In 2012, the dermatology departments of the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University generated a lot of buzz around a potential "miracle cure" for baldness. The big discovery? A relationship between prostaglandin D2 (a fatty acid derivative) and male pattern baldness, and hair loss in women. The researchers demonstrated, for the first time in humans, that a lipid derivative called prostaglandin D2 was elevated in balding areas – but not in hair-bearing areas – of men with hair loss. More importantly, they also discovered that prostaglandin D2 inhibits hair lengthening. The more prostaglandin D2 present, the shorter a hair grows. The team suggested that by maybe inhibiting prostaglandin D2 in the scalp, hair loss might be stopped. And that got a lot of hair loss sufferers (and pharmaceutical companies) excited. Prostaglandin-D2 inhibitors were already in trials as a treatment for asthma. It wouldn't be hard to develop a topical for men&#

How Long Does Postpartum Hair Loss Last?

After you have a baby, there's hardly time for yourself. Showers are few and far between, meals are generally eaten while standing in the kitchen, and fixing your hair is out of the question. But while your hair is probably the last thing on your mind, it is part of an issue that not enough people talk about: postpartum hair loss. Dr. Heather Hawthorne, MD and board-certified family physician at Doctor On Demand, spoke to POPSUGAR about postpartum hair loss, which affects a lot more women than most people realise. What Is Postpartum Hair Loss? During pregnancy, a lot of women may start to feel like Rapunzel due to their hair growing so fast and strong that you feel it could hoist a handsome prince up a tower (wouldn't that be great?). 6 Ways to Stop Hair Loss, According to Science

Here are the best ways to keep what you've got. (Getty) Statistics show that by the age of 35, around 66 percent of men lose a considerable amount of hair, and by 55, 85 percent of men have significant hair loss...by which I mean bald or balding. I'm really sorry, but that means there's a giant chance you're either going to go completely bald, or at least partially.  And even though it's not the end of the world if (or when) you lose your hair, it's certainly not pleasant to go through, and it can take a huge shit on your self-esteem. Life is mean, isn't it? However, if it's any consolation, it's actually been scientifically proven that women totally dig bald dudes and get all hot in the panties for them, because they see baldies as smarter, more dominant, and overall way sexier than men who still have a perfect head of hair.  But if that's not enough solace to make you come to terms with going bald, there are some science-backed ways to try a

Castor oil is great for thickening and regrowing hair, eyelashes and eyebrows

By Natural News Castor oil is often overlooked for its benefits for the skin and hair because of its extremely thick and sticky consistency.  However, if you're looking for a cheap, natural remedy for several common skin and hair complaints, then castor oil is definitely worth your time. Castor oil for regrowing and thickening hair, eyelashes and eyebrows I first stumbled on castor oil as a remedy for regrowing thin eyebrows. I had over-plucked my brows back in the nineties when it was the hip thing to have pencil thin brows, and they never did quite recover.  It became necessary for me to pencil in the "bald" spots and I missed the natural look of real hair where these spots were missing. I read about castor oil as a remedy for thinning brows and hair, and thought I'd try it. I bought a hexane free, organic and cold pressed castor oil and started applying it to my eyebrows every night after washing my face.  After about three months, I noticed my
