While we may believe that hair follicles grow constantly, they actually have two phases: dormant and active. An enzyme called janus kinase (JAK) suspends hair in a rested state and for bald men the hair remains that way.

But Angela Christiano of Columbia University has been experimenting with a drug that inhibits JAK, allowing hair to start growing again. In mice who received topical ruxolitinib for five days, hair regrew fully within three weeks while the control mice showed no sign of growth. It is believed that the effect would also be shown in humans.

The research is published in Science Advances and presents a tantalizing prospect to bald men that they could return to having a full head of hair.

Christiano says on Columbia University Medical Center's website: "What we've found is promising, though we haven't yet shown it's a cure for pattern baldness."

Before humans could use the drug it has to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but this is a promising lead in the battle against hair loss.

Men have long attempted to put a brave face on losing their hair. It is said that bald men are more virile and it has even been suggested by scientists that it gives men an evolutionary advantage in finding mates because it shows females that they are mature enough for sexual intercourse.

But it's probably fair to say that most of us would rather just keep our hair.
